Universal City Studios, doing business as Universal Pictures and also known as Universal Studios, is a motion picture company.
It is a subsidiary of Comcast.
History
Universal Film Manufacturing Company was founded on April 30, 1912.
On March 15, 1915, it became a film studio, Universal City Studios.
Most of the studio is comprised of the unincorporated city, Universal City, CA, USA, with portions of the studio in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
In 1928, it was named Universal Pictures Company Inc.
Merger with International Pictures
On July 30, 1946, it merged with International Pictures to become Universal-International Pictures Inc. Distribution and copyright control remained under the name of Universal Pictures Company Inc.
Decca Records takes control
Decca Records took control of Universal in 1952. In 1962, MCA and Decca records merged, with the remaining company retaining the MCA name.
Merger with Revue Productions
In 1964, MCA formed Universal City Studios, Inc., merging Universal with MCA's television division, Revue Productions. Universal kept the Universal Pictures name, and Revue was renamed Universal Television in 1966.
