The Neo Geo Pocket Color was a handheld video game console by SNK. It was the successor to the Neo Geo Pocket that, unlike its predecessor, had a full color graphic display.
The Neo Geo Pocket Color was released in Japan on March 16, 1999, in North America on August 6, 1999, and in Europe on October 1, 1999.
On October 21, 1999, a variation of the system was released only in Japan. The New Neo Geo Pocket Color was a smaller, slimmer variant that was 13% smaller than the original.
Release
The Neo Geo Pocket sold well at first, having strong sales helped by the availability of fourteen games at launch, which was a record for the time. However, it was released a year after the release of the Game Boy Color, and the WonderSwan was released in Japan a few days prior. Due to stiff competition from the other handheld video game consoles, sales of the Neo Geo Pocket Color went into a steep decline.
Cancellation
SNK was undergoing severe financial troubles at the time of the release of the Neo Geo Pocket Color and was acquired by Aruze in January 2000. Under Aruze's direction, SNK withdrew completely from the North American and European markets on June 13, 2000, which led to the end of SNK's worldwide operations and the de facto cancellation of the Neo Geo Pocket Color in those markets. The Neo Geo Pocket Color continued being supported in Japan until SNK went bankrupt on October 22, 2001.
