Retro Studios is a subsidiary of Nintendo of America.

Foundation

Retro Studios was founded on September 21, 1998.

It was formed by Nintendo and the video game producer Jeff Spangenberg, who had previously founded Acclaim Studios Austin.

The original intent of the studio was to create games aimed at an older demographic, by creating the Metroid Prime series. They also developed or co-developed entries in Nintendo's family franchises such as the Donkey Kong Country series and Mario Kart series.
