A video cassette recorder (VCR), or video recorder is an electromechanical device that records analog video and audio on cassette tapes, and can play back the recording.

At the 1970 Consumer Electronics Show, Philips introduced the consumer VCR (video cassette recording) device. However, this format was not compatible with either of the later, more popular Betamax or VHS models.
