X-Men was a live-action film by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation that utilized computer generated imagery. It was the first theatrical X-Men film in the 20th Century Studios X-Men series.

Story

Professor X leads the mutant superpowered team known as the X-Men, which consists of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Wolverine. Magneto leads the Brotherhood of Mutants, which consists of Mystique, Sabretooth, and Toad. Professor X and Magneto have different views on humanity. Professor X wants to change the fear of mutants through activism and acts of decency. Magneto, having emotional scars from his time in a Nazi concentration camp as a child, sees the violence against mutants and does not see the good in humanity perceived by the professor.

Magneto plans to use the power transference ability of Rogue to expand the distance of a device that was built to convert humans to mutants. The device doesn't work as intended and instead leads to the death of humans that lack the mutant X gene. The X-Men have to save Rogue and prevent the activation of the device.

A side story focuses on the difficulties Jean Grey has in controlling her powers. This sets up the Dark Phoenix arc, which is further explored in the sequel films X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand. It is also explored in the prequel films X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
